Computer Network Architecture: Computer Network is Designed in many ways and every design has it’s own Benefits & Drawbacks. in this post i have explained in details both the Computer Network Architecture. 3 Layer hierarchical model and Spine-and-leaf Architecture.

Any Computer Network Architecture can be complicated based on the topology and protocols used for it. So, Network Experts understood the problems and designed 3 layer hierarchical model and Spine-and-leaf to design reliable network infrastructure.

Three-layer hierarchical model

Let us understand 1st Three-layer hierarchical Model in details, Core Layer, Distribution Layer and Access layer.

this 3 layer Network hierarchical model is design to help Design, maintained and scalable, reliable and cost-effective networks.

Each network in this model has it’s own feature and functionality to reduce network complexity.

Here is the layout of Three-layer Hierarchical model.

Now Let us understand each layer in detail

Core Layer

As we can see in the above diagram this layer is responsible for transporting high amount of traffic quickly. Core layer is provide interconnectivity between High end router and Distribution Layer with redundancy Links. We do not implement any policies on this core layer. in this Layer we only use High-End Switches

Distribution Layer

This layer is responsible for establishing communication between core layer and access layer. We can define the policies as per the network requirement such as Routing, Filtering and WAN access to determine how packet access the core layer.

This layer is also responsible for providing fastest way that network service requests are accessed. In this Layer we use Layer 3 Switches.

Spine-and-Leaf Architecture

Spine-and-Leaf Architecture is specially used into Data Center Networks & also can be used in big Corporate Networks reduce the latency.

Spine and Leaf is two-tier Clos architecture. This Network also form full mesh topology to provide redundancy and at the same time reduce the number of hops from source to destination.

In Spine-and-leaf Architecture: every source server to reach any Destination server have same hops, no matter which spine is used in the network. biggest benefit of Spine & leaf is same hop count is available into entire network.

Leaf Layer

Leaf Layer is same as access layer in 3-layer hierarchical model. this layer is also connected to end device but the only difference between access layer and leaf layer is access layer connects to end devices like computers, access points, IP phones etc. where leaf is connected to Servers.

Leaf is directly connected to all the Spine, So that load can be equally distributed amongst the top-tier Switches.

Spine Layer

Spine Layer is the backbone of the network and is responsible for interconnecting all leaf switches. Additional Spine can be added to Network to reduce the load of other Spine switch and increase the Bandwidth into network and every spine will have direct connectivity to Leaf Switch.
